US certification label Not in the photos

The auction did not photograph the B-pillar, so whether there is a label the photos cannot tell.

What it is and why it matters for registration

Where it is

With the driver's door open — on the B-pillar (the post between the front and rear doors), by the door lock. Usually black or white, with “MFD BY” at the top. Next to it there is a yellow-and-white tyre pressure placard — that is another plate, not needed for registration.

What it says

1MFD BY VOLKSWAGEN DE MEXICO S.A. DE C.V.  10/21
2GVWR LBS 5181  KG 2350
3GAWR FRONT LBS 2535 KG 1150 · REAR LBS 2756 KG 1250
4THIS VEHICLE CONFORMS TO ALL APPLICABLE U.S. FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY AND THEFT PREVENTION STANDARDS…
53VVXXXXXXXXXXXXXX   TYPE: MPV
  1. 1The manufacturer and the month of manufacture.
  2. 2GVWR — the gross vehicle weight rating.
  3. 3GAWR — the front and rear axle ratings (with the tyres stated).
  4. 4The manufacturer's statement that the car complies with the US federal safety standards (FMVSS). This sentence is the certification.
  5. 5VIN — must match the VIN under the windscreen and in the documents — and the vehicle type.

Why it matters

A US car has no European certificate of conformity (CoC), so before registration in Lithuania it goes through a technical expertise (individual approval). It takes the date of manufacture and the permitted weights from this label. In Latvia, the CSDD asks for it too.

If it is missing

A replacement label can usually be ordered by VIN only through the make's US representative — the European ones have no access to that system. It takes time and delays registration. Copies from the internet will not do: they are not the manufacturer's.
