With the driver's door open — on the B-pillar (the post between the front and rear doors), by the door lock. Usually black or white, with “MFD BY” at the top. Next to it there is a yellow-and-white tyre pressure placard — that is another plate, not needed for registration.

Why it matters

If it is missing

A replacement label can usually be ordered by VIN only through the make's US representative — the European ones have no access to that system. It takes time and delays registration. Copies from the internet will not do: they are not the manufacturer's.
